Original Surface Designs

Since 2018 Rachel has been designing surface patterns which feature the flora and fauna of Trinidad and Tobago, in particular hummingbirds.

Being a passionate hummingbird photographer, Rachel was looking at new ways to use her photographs to keep ahead of the market. Research led her to Spoonflower, a popular print on demand fabric supplier based in the USA, with factories throughout the world. The possibilities are endless once you have a repeating design! The first hummingbird design was printed on a linen-cotton fabric and was much admired by friends and family. Multiple suggestions were received about what to do with the fabric. Finally, after several weeks of looking at and touching the fabric, Rachel took the plunge and started cutting...

Three years later and many hundreds of pieces of fabric later, Land of the hummingbird has produced face masks, tea towels, napkins, placemats, table cloths, table runners, aprons, scarves, kaftans, cotton tops, swimwear, duvet covers, cushions, bags and pouches. Many of these items have been produced in their hundreds, some as special one-off orders, plenty as samples. All joyful, colourful and exciting to receive!

Design Commissions

Rachel has already enjoyed several collaborations and design commissions with other creatives. Her designs for D'Punchline are particularly popular. Hummingbirds and scarlet ibis line many of D'Punchline's beautiful handcrafted leather bags. The owner of Esperanza Alta, a local hummingbird garden, is delighted with her custom designed hummingbird fabric, including her logo, which is being made into blouses for her to wear while giving garden tours.

Many of our designs are available for print on demand through our Spoonflower shop. You can order test swatches, fat quarters or yards / meters to suit your project.
